i was on the trail with my neighbors kids and my own. a 13 yr old, a 10 yr old, a 7 yr old and a four year old learning to ride without training wheels. i had my 2 dogs with us and we were enjoying the railtrail, when some guy who was riding alone, came up upon us and was very annoyed that i had my children and the dogs out for a walk. he watched while we took a break and got a drink. then we headed back towards home. we were real close to the end of our walk and that same man returned on his bike. he stopped behind me and said"u know u shouldnt have your dogs and your kids on the trail. i am trying to ride my bike"and i was shocked that he was back, and that he couldnt just go around us and on with his own business. now my dogs were on leashes, i had poop bags for them, and my kids were wearing helmets, so in my eyes we were obiding the laws of the rail trail. now ive not been going for fear i will be approached by that man. HOW UNFAIR! would he like me to teach my kids how to ride there bikes on the main road? or what

sad that some people are like that. I am single and ride with friends and the tuesday night group or alone. I am on of the nicer folks out there. I announce myself if overtaking. I do get a little bit upset when I have to do this several times because people don't pay attention or don't mind their kids and instruct them how to ride on the trail, as in keep to the right unless overtaking others and let them weave all around. you were cleaning up after your dog there is no problem there. I am sure the kids were well behaved too. So don't let that guy keep you away.

My only troubles and big complaints are the horse riders that don't clean up after their horses. And one instance with a group of 6 horse back riders near 7 valleys that were blocking the trail riding side by side and didn't want to share the trail or move to single file so others could get by in either direction.

I am an avid mountain biker who enjoys riding the rail trails. I am always respectful of other users of the trail. Unfortunately, the trail is used by the "Lance Armstrong wannabes" who speed along with their bright colored outfits with advertisements splashed all over them. I'm sure you have seen them. Many of thse guys are ignorant and disrespectful of other trail users. When they pass you they don't warn you like they are supposed to. When you wave you never get a reply because they are focused on "training". On this one occassion one of them passed me and all he shouted was MOVE. I was not impeding his lane. The trail is NOT their private training course.

Sounds like more patroling is needed! People are alone and vulnerable on some streches of the trail, let's try and keep it safe for the decent people or close it,that's a shame!

Most riders and walkers I've met on the Trail have moved over slightly to allow me to pass, whether I'm biking or running. The key is to announce yourself well in advance. The faster I go, the more distance I need for that announcement. If your group wasn't blocking the whole Trail when that biker approached, he was way out of line. My only close call was in Seven Valleys when a family of 3 all rode slowly side-by-side northbound. As I approached from the rear, I rang my bell. (Those things can be heard at a long distance.) At my fifth ring, the man on the left started to move right. I finally had room to pass. As I was only seconds from overtaking them, he looked over his left shoulder to identify the source of the bell. As many do, he drifted left as he turned his head. I was forced up onto the large rocks along the tracks. Luckily, there was no collision and no fall. If all faster Trail users would announce before passing and the rest would be aware of others and not block the entire Trail, we'd be a lot better off.

I wouldn't let those people terrorize you into not using the trail...that's what they want.

They have to realize that the trail is a public space. It's for everyone and must be shared. The trail is wide enough and with the amount of people I've witnessed being on the trail at any given time I can't imagine that there was no room on the trail for all of you.

And thanks for cleaning up after your dog. You have no idea how many people in York County just don't care or have the decency to do so! I'm tired of stepping in it already! Even seeing it laying there on the ground is unbearable!

If it is any consolation, you are not the only ones. We do both hiking and biking on the trail. The trail has more than a few reckless bicyclists. Over the years, we saw numerous "near misses" of bicyclists nearly hitting people who were traveling on foot, including some who didn't get out of their way fast enough because they were taking photos of the Howard Tunnel before the bikes appeared. Many do not announce themselves when they approach from behind; which has scared some of the elderly folks who were strolling along. They ride 15 or MPH while trying to squeeze in between pedestrians in front of them and bikes coming the opposite way. Some don't yield to horses but just weave in and out of them! We pull to the opposite side and stop if horses are approaching, or call out from about 30 or more ft. back if we are coming up from behind, and wait for the rider to tell us that we may pass. They say how much they appreciate it because hardly anyone else does that for them! Not all bicyclists are rude. But, a lot ride like they are in training for the Tour de France. I don't care if they want to ride fast. We do too. But, they don't want anyone in their way and they won't slow down. They forget what a hand-brake is.
