Northern Extension of HRTCP

A groundbreaking for Phase 1, a 1.5-mile section from John Rudy County Park to Crist Memorial Fields, was held in November 2006 and construction was completed in August 2007.

Phase 1A, which crosses Crist Fields, was completed in 2009. Phase 2, a 2.5-mile section from Crist Fields to the RT 30, is being engieered. A bridge at Emig Road slated for construction in 2011.

The final phases to complete the connection to the Heritage Rail Trail in the City of York, are currently under study.

York County Rail Trail Authority announced the start of construction on phase two of the Northern Extension of the Heritage Rail Trail County Park. The project includes completion of the trail section on Crist Memorial Fields in Manchester Township, construction of a bridge for pedestrians and bicyclist across the Codorus Creek, and ramp approaches on the east and west banks of the creek.

Following a competitive bidding process, Kinsley Construction of York, PA was awarded the construction contract, and work is scheduled to begin in early 2012. This $1.3 million project is funded through the federal Transportation Enhancement Program administered in Pennsylvania by the Department of Transportation; the Keystone Recreation, Park and Conservation Fund and Growing Greener Bond Fund of the Pennsylvania Department of Conservation and Natural Resources; and local contributions to the Rail Trail Authority’s TRAIL LINKS Capital Campaign. Engineering was done by the York firm of C.S.Davidson, Inc.

A public groundbreaking ceremony was held on December 5, 2011 at 3 PM on the trail at Crist Memorial Fields.
