Current Status

Construction of the first 1.4-mile section of this greenway
began in 2007 and is expected to be completed over a 12-month period. In addition to grading, preparation of trail sub-surface,
drainage, and laying of a crushed stone surface, the project includes the construction of several bridges.
Local residents are reminded to avoid
the site during this construction period for their own safety and the safety of construction workers.
Your cooperation is appreciated.

Vision
|
|
|
In 1996 Springfield Township adopted
a new Official Township Map.
This map delineated greenways throughout the township
and provided a greenway definition with two goals. First,
providing for permanent open space in developed areas,
and second, encouraging non-motorized transportation
and recreation. In conjunction with the development
of Logan's Reserve, the first greenway could be established.
In the spring of 2004, the project was awarded state and federal
money to complete engineering and construction of the first 1.4-mile
section. In August 2004 representatives from PennDOT, PA DCNR, York County Parks,
York County Planning, and the Rail Trail Authority met with local planners to
determine initial steps in the project.
During 2005 the project moved forward with engineering and design, as well
as investigating opportunities to link to nearby county parks.

The Future
|
|
|
The trail will start in Loganville Borough, pass through
the township center, and end at a trailhead to be devloped in Phase 2.
The alignment will afford
easy access from several neighborhoods, parks, an elementary
school, and a future school location. The projected
low gradients of the trail will make it accessible to
the elderly, very young, and physically challenged.
The 10-foot soft-surface trail will be designed for
pedestrians, cyclists, and equestrian users.
The greenway definition of conservation
of open space includes water quality and wildlife habitat
enhancements. In conjunction with the construction of the trail,
stream and bank restoration, exotic
plant control, and native plant installations will be accomplished by other agencies.
Wildlife and aquatic habitats will also be improved.
Future connections to other parks,
neighborhoods, and the Heritage Rail Trail County Park
have been planned.
