What are the addresses for the parking lots so I can find them with my phone?

I belong to a group that wants to organize a run or walk on the rail trail to raise funds. How do I get permission to do that?

All organized events on the Heritage Rail Trail must be scheduled through York County Parks at www.yorkcountyparks.org or (717) 840-7440.  Events on the Hanover Trolley Trail must be scheduled through the York County Rail Trail Authority.  There is a review process, and you will be asked for your proposed date, section of the rail trail to be used, and a Certificate of Insurance in order to review your request

I have a scout group that is planning a visit to the rail trail. Is there a place where we can camp along the rail trail?

York County Parks does not allow camping on county-owned property along the Heritage Rail Trail. Summit Grove Camp & Conference Center in New Freedom at www.summitgrovecamp.org may be able to help with accommodating a youth group. Contact the York County Rail Trail Authority for other suggestions.

Are horses allowed on the rail trail?

Horses are allowed on the Heritage Rail Trail from New Freedom to the City of York. They are not allowed on the northern extension section. However, the rail trail is also occasionally closed to horses if the surface is wet and can be easily damaged by horse traffic. I belong to a group that wants to do a service project on the rail trail. Who do I contact?

The Heritage Rail Trail is maintained by York County Parks.  Contact: www.yorkcountyparks.org or (717) 840-7440 for information on the types of service projects that may be available. Service projects along the Hanover Trolley Trail are coordinated by contacting the York County Rail Trail Authority at info@yorkcountytrails.org or (717) 428-0999.

There’s a tree down on the rail trail. Who do I contact?

Contact York County Parks for any maintenance issues on the Heritage Rail Trail. Contact York County Rail Trail Authority for maintenance related to the Hanover Trolley Trail.

I found some _____ (keys, cell phone, etc) on the rail trail. What should I do?

Lost and found items on the Heritage Rail Trail are handled by the York County Parks ranger division. (717) 840-7229. Lost and found items on the Hanover Trolley Trail are handled by the York County Rail Trail Authority. (717) 428-0999.

Is the rail trail ADA accessible? What kind of surface does the rail trail have?

Yes, both the Heritage Rail Trail and Hanover Trolley Trail are ADA accessible.  In most cases, the surface is a compacted stone.  Some sections are asphalt paved.

Are physically challenged people allowed to use motorized bicycles or scooters on the rail trail?

Yes, but they are advised to contact York County Parks for use on the Heritage Rail Trail and York County Rail Trail Authority for use on the Hanover Trolley Trail to insure their safety.

I’d like to place a bench along the rail trail. Who do I contact?

York County Parks manages a bench program for the Heritage Rail Trail. York County Rail Trail Authority manages a similar program on the Hanover Trolley Trail.  These programs outline the procedure by which a standard bench, plaque and location are chosen and fees charged. There are a limited number of bench locations available, resulting typically in a waiting list.
